Kumble's Advice to Abhishek Sharma

Anil Kumble, the former captain and coach of India, has shared insights on how explosive opener Abhishek Sharma can enhance his game by balancing aggression with the need for longevity at the crease, similar to the legendary Virender Sehwag.

At just 25, Abhishek has emerged as one of the most dynamic batsmen at the top of the order, frequently providing his teams with rapid starts through a high-risk batting style.

However, his challenge lies in converting these quick starts into significant scores, a concern that has been highlighted recently.

Kumble compared Sharma to Sehwag, noting that while Sehwag aimed to dominate every delivery, he adapted his approach as he transitioned from Test cricket to limited-overs formats, learning to pace his innings effectively.

Kumble emphasized that while Sehwag maintained a strike rate of 140-150, Abhishek should focus on playing a more measured game rather than aiming for an unrealistic strike rate of 300. He stated, 'You have to play a number of balls.'

Kumble pointed out that if Sharma can bat for around 20 balls, he is likely to approach the 50-run mark, citing examples like Sanju Samson, who has learned to convert starts into substantial scores by going deeper into innings.

This season, Kumble hopes to see a more mature Abhishek, which the Sunrisers Hyderabad will be counting on as they prepare for the IPL starting March 28.

AB de Villiers, the former South African captain, also highlighted the importance of consistency for Sharma, who now faces heightened expectations.

At 25, Sharma is at a pivotal stage in his career where he must embrace greater responsibility. De Villiers noted the media scrutiny and the pressure to deliver consistent performances.

Reflecting on Sharma's T20 World Cup experience, de Villiers remarked on his inconsistency, despite a strong finish in the final. He acknowledged Sharma's impressive IPL 2025 performance, where he boasted a strike rate near 200 and scored over 400 runs, but emphasized that there is room for improvement.

De Villiers reiterated that consistency is a personal challenge Sharma must tackle mentally, especially as the top-ranked T20I batter in the world, which brings its own set of pressures.
