Anil Kumble Predicts Virat Kohli's Innovative Play for RCB in IPL 2026
Kumble Discusses Kohli's Impact on RCB
New Delhi, March 18: Anil Kumble, the former captain of India and a renowned spinner, has emphasized the strong bond between Virat Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), suggesting that fans might witness new batting techniques from Kohli this IPL season.
Kumble remarked, “Kohli remains the cornerstone of RCB’s identity. Over the past decade, the franchise has revolved around his influence, especially since he took on the captaincy in 2013,” during an interview with JioStar.
The 55-year-old, who previously served as India's head coach, expressed his astonishment at the warm welcome given to AB de Villiers during his 100th Test match in Bengaluru.
“AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle have both enjoyed similar support. I was captivated by the reception AB received at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for his 100th Test; it highlighted the affection Bengaluru fans have for both RCB and Virat,” Kumble noted.
Kumble asserted that the association between Kohli and RCB is as enduring as that of MS Dhoni with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.
“Just as we associate MS with CSK, Virat will always be linked to RCB, and I believe that legacy will persist,” he added.
He also recognized the contributions of spinners Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma in RCB's title victory last season, along with the performance of the fast bowlers.
“The standout performances last season came from spinners Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma, whose consistency was crucial in leading RCB to the finals and securing the championship. The pace bowlers, like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, were always expected to deliver,” Kumble explained.
Regarding Kohli's intent to take more risks in IPL 2026 and his enhanced strike rate, Kumble stated, “Top players are always striving for improvement; they never settle. Each season presents an opportunity for personal growth and team enhancement.”
Kumble believes that Kohli might introduce new shots this season.
“Don’t be surprised if he approaches this season with a fresh perspective, possibly experimenting with shots like the scoop or reverse scoop. We’ve seen AB de Villiers execute these effectively, and Virat could certainly incorporate them into his batting style. Exceptional players like him are always evolving and pushing their limits,” he concluded.
