Kumble Commends CSK's Strategic Move

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 17: Anil Kumble, the former Indian cricket star, has expressed his admiration for the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) decision to acquire Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions, stating that he perfectly aligns with the team's requirements.

Samson, who has been a prominent figure for the Rajasthan Royals over the past decade, will now wear the iconic yellow jersey of CSK. In exchange, Sam Curran and veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja have moved to the Royals.

Having represented the Royals for 11 seasons, Samson has become synonymous with the franchise. During a discussion on JioStar, Kumble reflected on the legacy of Indian cricket, mentioning legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni, and emphasized the generational shift in the sport.

Kumble highlighted Samson's roots in Kerala, his ability to speak Tamil, and his role as a wicketkeeper-batter, all of which make him an ideal addition to CSK. He remarked, “The transition of icons in Indian cricket has been remarkable, and Sanju's inclusion is a significant step for CSK. His recent outstanding performances, including pivotal innings in the World Cup, add to his value.”

He further noted that Samson's background and skills will resonate well with the fans in Chennai, enhancing the team's connection with its supporters. Kumble stated, “His experience and Tamil-speaking ability will be beneficial for CSK, especially as he mirrors MS Dhoni's playing style.”

Kumble also suggested that Samson could take on a vice-captaincy role within CSK, given his extensive leadership experience with the Rajasthan Royals. He commented, “Sanju is well-equipped to handle responsibilities akin to a vice-captain. His long tenure as captain of Rajasthan has prepared him for such a role, which CSK may find advantageous.”

He added, “Given the challenges CSK faced last season with captaincy transitions, having someone like Sanju in the leadership group is a smart move. If Ruturaj is unavailable, I wouldn't be surprised if MS Dhoni entrusts Sanju with the wicketkeeping duties at some point during the season.”
