Kumble's Concerns Over KKR's Decisions

Anil Kumble has expressed his disapproval regarding Kolkata Knight Riders' decision to part ways with Shreyas Iyer and Phil Salt following their triumphant 2024 season. He emphasized that unless the three-time IPL champions recognize the significance of keeping essential players, they cannot be viewed as serious contenders for the title.

Shreyas Iyer transitioned to Punjab Kings, where he led the team to its first IPL final in nearly ten years, while Phil Salt, a crucial player in KKR's success, joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru, contributing significantly to their first title win last year.

Kumble remarked, "Two years back, KKR clinched the IPL trophy for the third time, with Iyer and Salt playing pivotal roles in that victory. Their departure is a misstep for KKR."

He pointed out the inconsistency in KKR's player retention strategy, stating, "Letting go of Iyer and Salt has left them without a captain who has won the IPL." Although Ajinkya Rahane brings experience as the current captain, he has yet to secure an IPL title.

Kumble added, "While Rahane has led teams like Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals, he hasn't lifted the IPL trophy as a captain. Having a captain with that experience is a significant advantage, which KKR has forfeited. They must learn to retain their key players to avoid ongoing struggles and be considered title favorites."

The former Indian captain praised Iyer's leadership skills, noting his success with Punjab Kings last season. "Shreyas Iyer is an underrated captain. Transitioning to a new franchise and achieving success is no small feat, especially when the team hadn't reached the finals in a decade. His leadership was impressive," Kumble stated.

Kumble further commented on the scrutiny Iyer faces, saying, "Some players constantly need to prove themselves, and Shreyas is one of them. Despite his performances, doubts linger. He is an exceptional leader, albeit underrated."

Pujara's Take on SRH's Opening Pair

In another discussion, former Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara praised the opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head from Sunrisers Hyderabad, labeling them as "more destructive" than the renowned pairing of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle from Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Pujara stated, "Based on their performances in recent seasons, Sharma and Head are among the most formidable opening pairs in IPL history. They consistently know how to attack from the first ball, helping SRH surpass the 250-run mark frequently, a feat unmatched by any other team in the league."

He continued, "When discussing aggressive opening partnerships, Kohli and Gayle come to mind, but Sharma and Head are even more fearsome. Bowlers dread facing them at the start of an innings."

However, Pujara noted that despite SRH's strength, particularly at home, they need to enhance their away performance. "While they are a powerful team at home in Hyderabad, their away record is lacking. They struggle to maintain their aggressive batting approach on the road, as opponents are aware of their reliance on batting prowess to set high totals," he concluded.
