Amit Mishra Advocates for Consistency in India's T20 World Cup Final Lineup
Mishra's Advice for the T20 World Cup Final
New Delhi, March 7: Former Indian cricketer Amit Mishra has recommended that the Indian team maintain their current lineup for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand, scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Sunday.
With discussions surrounding the possibility of fielding three spinners on the spin-friendly Ahmedabad pitch, or substituting Kuldeep Yadav for Varun Chakaravarthy, Mishra stressed the importance of sticking to a consistent team rather than making hasty changes.
Chakaravarthy, who has been India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament, faced challenges in the last two matches, conceding significant runs. In the semi-final against England, he allowed 64 runs while taking just one wicket, and during the Super 8 match against the West Indies, he gave away 40 runs.
“I don’t believe changes are necessary. While the pitch may have its quirks, the last semi-final pitch was more favorable for batting. Even though bowlers were hit for runs, scoring 500 runs in T20 is a tough feat, indicating a good batting surface. If the pitch doesn’t assist bowlers, they can slightly adjust their tactics—like bowling slower or targeting the off stump—but major alterations aren’t needed,” Mishra stated.
He emphasized the significance of team stability in high-stakes matches, saying, “In such crucial games, making changes can be challenging, and it’s best to avoid it. A winning combination is crucial. Introducing a new player in a pressure situation raises questions about their ability to handle the stress. The team has already navigated competitive scenarios, boosting their confidence. I believe this team should remain unchanged,” Mishra added.
Mishra also provided insights on how World No. T20I batter Abhishek Sharma can enhance his performance against spin, an area where he has faced difficulties throughout the tournament.
He acknowledged Sharma’s previous lack of confidence but noted his recent improvement. “I mentioned after three matches that he seemed unconfident, but following his innings against Zimbabwe, his confidence has grown. Even though he got out early in the last match, he played some good shots—there’s no issue. His confidence is evident,” Mishra remarked.
On strategies for tackling challenging spin bowling, Mishra recommended a cautious approach. “If he struggles against certain bowlers, like an off-spinner, he should consider taking a single to rotate the strike, as there are still five overs left and other bowlers who can deliver different types of deliveries,” he explained.
As India prepares to face New Zealand in the final, Mishra highlighted potential X-factors for the team. “Sanju Samson has emerged as a key player. Besides him, I believe Shivam Dube, captain Suryakumar Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma could also play pivotal roles in the final. I sincerely hope they excel, especially Abhishek. Suryakumar is in good form; he tends to spend more time at the crease, which should benefit the team,” Mishra concluded.
