Ambati Rayudu Analyzes India's Struggles Against Ireland and Future Challenges
Rayudu's Insights on India's Performance
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu expressed his lack of surprise regarding the team's 0-2 defeat to Ireland, attributing it to inadequate preparation. He highlighted that the players, particularly finisher Tilak Varma, struggled to adapt to the slower pitches.
In an exclusive interview, Rayudu, who has represented India in 55 ODIs and six T20Is, noted that the transition from the IPL's fast tracks to the slower, more challenging conditions in Belfast proved difficult for the reigning T20 champions, who narrowly lost the second T20I by just one run.
Rayudu stated, "I’m not surprised because they weren’t adequately prepared for the conditions they faced. Transitioning from flat pitches to those with lateral movement is always tough."
Concerns Over Tilak Varma's Technique
Rayudu pointed out specific issues affecting the team's performance, particularly Tilak Varma's footwork against slower bowlers. Despite scoring a commendable 55 runs in the recent match, Varma's innings came off 46 balls and lacked the necessary momentum.
"His struggles against slow bowling on such surfaces have been evident for some time," Rayudu remarked. "He needs to improve his ability to accelerate the game, especially on pitches where the ball doesn't come onto the bat easily."
Rayudu emphasized that Varma tends to favor square boundaries against spinners, which can be challenging when the ball doesn't bounce well. He suggested that Varma should work on his footwork to enhance his game.
Caution with Young Talent Sooryavanshi
Regarding the rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Rayudu advised against rushing the 15-year-old into the national team. He believes it's crucial to rely on experienced openers who have proven themselves, especially those who have previously won the World Cup.
"Sooryavanshi is gaining valuable experience in the dressing room and learning about his role. It's important for him to absorb as much as possible during this tour," Rayudu explained.
Despite Sooryavanshi's impressive IPL performance, where he boasted a strike rate exceeding 230, Rayudu cautioned against hastily including him in the lineup just because of a couple of losses.
Looking Ahead to England Series
Rayudu acknowledged the challenges posed by the pitches in Ireland but expressed optimism about the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. He believes that the conditions in England will be significantly better than those faced in Ireland.
"The quality of wickets in England is far superior to what we've encountered here, so I wouldn't dwell too much on the losses against Ireland," he stated.
Fans can catch the first T20I between India and England on July 1, 2026, at 10:00 PM IST, broadcasted live on various Sony Sports channels.
