Ambati Rayudu Analyzes India's Struggles Against Ireland and Future Prospects
Rayudu Reflects on India's Performance
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu expressed his lack of surprise regarding the team's 0-2 defeat against Ireland, attributing it to inadequate preparation. He pointed out that finisher Tilak Varma struggled to adapt to the slower pitches, which contributed to the team's challenges.
In an exclusive interview, Rayudu, who has represented India in 55 ODIs and six T20Is, noted that the transition from the IPL's flat tracks to the slower, more challenging conditions in Ireland proved difficult for the reigning T20 world champions. The second T20I ended in a narrow loss by just one run in Belfast.
Rayudu stated, "I’m not surprised because I don’t think they were adequately prepared for the conditions they faced. Transitioning from fast tracks to slower ones with lateral movement is always tough." He emphasized that players are accustomed to quick bat swings, making control during the downswing a significant issue.
Addressing specific player performances, Rayudu highlighted Tilak Varma's footwork against slower bowlers as an area needing improvement. Although Tilak scored a commendable 55 runs in the recent match, it came off 46 balls and lacked the necessary momentum.
Rayudu remarked, "His struggle against slow bowling on such surfaces has been evident. He needs to enhance his game to adapt better to these conditions." He noted that Tilak tends to favor square boundaries against spinners, which can be challenging when the ball doesn’t come onto the bat well.
Furthermore, Rayudu advised that Tilak should focus on improving his shot selection and tempo. He mentioned, "He doesn’t utilize the sweep shot effectively, and enhancing this aspect of his game will naturally help him increase the tempo."
Rayudu also discussed the young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, advising against rushing him into the team. He emphasized the importance of allowing seasoned players, who have proven themselves, to lead the charge.
He stated, "Sooryavanshi is learning valuable lessons during this tour, which will benefit him in the long run. However, I wouldn’t advocate for his inclusion in the squad just because of a couple of losses."
Sooryavanshi, who impressed in the IPL with a strike rate exceeding 230, is anticipated to make his debut during the ongoing UK tour, which will transition to England for T20Is starting July 1.
Rayudu concluded by acknowledging the challenges posed by the pitches in Ireland but expressed optimism about the upcoming series against England. He remarked, "The wickets in England are of a much higher quality than what we faced here, so I wouldn’t dwell too much on the losses to Ireland."
