Alphonso Davies Makes History as 1,000th Player in FIFA World Cup 2026
Historic Milestone for Canada’s Captain
In a remarkable achievement, Alphonso Davies, the captain of Canada, became the 1,000th player to participate in the FIFA World Cup during the Round of 32 match against South Africa. This significant moment occurred on June 29, 2026, as Canada triumphed with a narrow 1-0 victory, securing their advancement to the Round of 16.
Davies, who had recently recovered from a hamstring injury, was brought on as a substitute in the second half by head coach Jesse Marsch. FIFA confirmed this milestone, marking Davies' entry into the expanded 48-team tournament's history.

The match saw Stephen Eustaquio score a dramatic last-minute goal, propelling Canada into the knockout stage for the first time in their history. The victory took place at Los Angeles Stadium, where Eustaquio's strike in the 92nd minute clinched the win.
Canada will now prepare to face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco match at Houston Stadium. Eustaquio's goal came from the edge of the box, capitalizing on a defensive error from South Africa and placing the ball into the bottom-left corner, out of reach of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
While South Africa displayed moments of promise during the first half, they struggled with their finishing. Canada nearly scored twice just before halftime, with a header from Moise Bombito being cleared off the line and a brilliant save from Williams denying Tajon Buchanan.
In the second half, Canada regained control, with Williams making crucial saves to keep South Africa at bay. Davies' introduction in the 75th minute energized the team, adding speed and creativity, but it was Eustaquio's decisive goal that sealed the match.
Despite the loss, South Africa can hold their heads high after reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
