New Delhi [India], September 3: World No. 2 Alexander Zverev kicked off his US Open 2026 journey with a hard-fought five-set win against Lorenzo Sonego, securing victory with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7-9), 7-5, 6-4 to move into the next round.

Having claimed his first Grand Slam title at the French Open earlier this year, Zverev is eager to build on that success and contend for another major championship in New York.

In a recent interview shared by a Media Channel, Zverev discussed the significance of winning his first Grand Slam, the dedication required to achieve it, and his aspirations to replicate that success at the US Open 2026.

“There was definitely some pressure on me, especially at my age. You never know if you’ll get that chance again. I was thrilled to finally hold my first Grand Slam trophy, but now that I have, I want more. I aim to keep improving and be a contender for the next title,” Zverev remarked regarding his maiden Grand Slam victory, as reported by the Media Channel.

Reflecting on the factors that contributed to his breakthrough, Zverev stated, “It was the culmination of years of hard work. Many times, I fell just short. That might have made the difference in the fifth set against Flavia. I felt ready to win, which was a different sensation compared to previous finals.”

He continued, “I’m glad it happened, but now we’re in New York, and I want to try to do it again. I feel like I’m regaining my rhythm and my game, which is a great feeling. I’m excited about the upcoming challenges and hope to perform at my best once more.”
