Ajit Agarkar's Future as Chief Selector of Indian Cricket Team in Question
Ajit Agarkar's Tenure and Achievements
Since taking on the role of chief selector for the Indian men's cricket team in 2023, Ajit Agarkar has overseen a remarkable period in white-ball cricket. Under his leadership, India secured three major trophies within two years: the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, along with the Champions Trophy in 2025. Additionally, the team reached the finals of the ODI World Cup in 2023. Following the success of the T20 World Cup 2026, reports emerged indicating that Agarkar had approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his contract until the ODI World Cup 2027. The BCCI has now addressed this significant request.
A source from the BCCI revealed that Agarkar's current contract is valid until September 2026. After this period, the board's secretary, Devajit Saikia, will determine whether to extend Agarkar's tenure leading up to the ODI World Cup 2027. “The selection panel operates as a sub-committee of the BCCI, and the selectors’ contracts are set to expire in September this year. Ajit’s contract concludes in September, and thereafter, a decision will be made regarding his continuation until next year’s ODI World Cup,” the source stated.
However, according to the BCCI constitution, Agarkar is eligible to serve for up to four years, meaning he may not need to formally request an extension, as his contract could automatically extend until September 2027. “A senior selector can remain in position for a maximum of four years as per the constitution, so there is no need for him to seek an extension,” the BCCI source added.
Probable Players for ODI World Cup 2027 Identified
As per the BCCI source, a list of 20 potential players for the ODI World Cup 2027 has already been compiled. Each of the five selectors is expected to monitor four of these players during the upcoming IPL 2026 season. “The BCCI aims for each selector to observe at least one match per week, covering five games weekly from the venue. Alternatively, they can also track performances via television,” the official explained.
