Rahane Reflects on India's Test Struggles
In a recent discussion on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast, former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane addressed the challenges faced by the Indian Test team over the past two years. He emphasized the necessity of having seven to eight experienced players in the squad, noting that the gradual exit of senior players has significantly impacted the two-time World Test Championship finalists.
Having recently announced his retirement from international cricket, Rahane pointed out that following India's failure to secure the ICC World Test Championship title in 2023, the team has been transitioning away from its veteran players.
Rahane and his middle-order partner Cheteshwar Pujara were among the first to exit the setup after the WTC final defeat to Australia. Subsequently, cricketing icons like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin also announced their retirements within six months, particularly after India faced a whitewash against New Zealand at home in 2024 and a 1-4 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
During these challenging series, the performance of Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin declined, leading them to retire ahead of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27. By August 2026, most of these legends had stepped away from international cricket, with only Rohit and Virat remaining as ODI specialists.
From the batting lineup that thrived in the 2010s, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja are the last senior players standing, with Jadeja increasingly being considered for a role as a specialist batter rather than an all-rounder.
The new generation, led by skipper Shubman Gill, includes players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, along with emerging talents such as Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Following a disappointing series against New Zealand in 2024, India faced another whitewash last year, losing 0-2 to South Africa at home for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Currently positioned fifth in the WTC standings, India faces a challenging path ahead with upcoming away series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, as well as a home series against Australia.
On the podcast, Rahane remarked, 'Test cricket fans are true lovers of the game. Over the last two years, we've seen many new players enter Test cricket. I believe that a successful Test team requires seven to eight senior players alongside two to three younger ones. However, what we are witnessing now is a team predominantly filled with newcomers.'
'The absence of senior players is a significant concern. Test cricket requires respect for experienced players, and the simultaneous departure of so many seniors has created issues for the team,' he added.
The upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is set to commence with the first match at Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19, followed by the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23 to 27.
