Afghanistan's Struggles in T20I Series Against India

In a recent match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Afghanistan's captain Ibrahim Zadran expressed the need for his team to engage in more matches against top-tier teams following a significant 127-run defeat to India in the final T20I. This loss resulted in a clean sweep for India, with Afghanistan finishing the series 0-3.

Throughout the series, Afghanistan found it challenging to match India's performance, culminating in another heavy loss in the last T20I.

Zadran shared his disappointment, noting some improvement during the powerplay but emphasized the team's struggle with maintaining momentum. He stated, "We showed some intent, but we lost wickets in quick succession. We need to focus on maintaining our intent. While we may face challenges in a few series, we will improve over time. Without intent, it becomes difficult to compete against international teams."

The captain acknowledged that the squad is still evolving in the T20 format post-World Cup and highlighted the importance of gaining experience against stronger opponents.

He remarked, "This was our first T20 series after the World Cup. To enhance our skills, we must play more matches, particularly against the top teams. While we compete against teams like Zimbabwe and Ireland, facing the strongest sides is crucial for our development."

India secured a dominant 3-0 series victory over Afghanistan, with a commanding 127-run win in the final T20I. Batting first, India set a challenging target of 221/7, thanks to a record-breaking performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 108 runs off just 34 balls.

Sharma's innings included nine fours and 11 sixes, reaching his half-century in a mere 16 balls and completing his century in just 31 balls, making him the fastest player from a Test-playing nation to achieve this feat, surpassing Rohit Sharma's previous record of 35 balls.

Sanju Samson contributed with a brisk 50 runs off 35 balls, marking his achievement of 9,000 runs in T20 cricket, while Shreyas Iyer and Shivam Dube added valuable runs as India crossed the 200-run mark in the 16th over.

In response, Afghanistan was bowled out for a mere 94 runs in 14.1 overs, marking their heaviest defeat in T20Is and their lowest total against India in this format. Although Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran started positively, India quickly seized control with effective bowling from Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yash Thakur.

Ravi Bishnoi and Nitish Kumar Reddy dismantled Afghanistan's middle and lower order, each taking three wickets, while Axar Patel claimed two. Reddy's quick dismissals of Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were pivotal, and Bishnoi wrapped up the innings by taking out Rashid Khan and Abdullah Ahmadzai.

This victory also marked India's 10th T20I win by a margin of over 100 runs, while Afghanistan's total of 94 surpassed their previous lowest T20I score against India, which was 111/8 during the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai.
