Afghanistan's Batting Challenges Highlighted by Zadran
In a recent match held in New Delhi, Afghanistan's captain Ibrahim Zadran acknowledged the team's difficulties with their batting strategy, which contributed to a seven-wicket loss against India in the second T20I. This defeat allowed India to secure a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
During the post-match interview, Zadran expressed that Afghanistan struggled to implement their game plan, especially during the powerplay, where India's bowlers applied significant pressure.
"We faced considerable challenges again. We didn't achieve our objectives. As a team, we discussed how to enhance our approach. Our performance in the powerplay was lacking, and they exerted pressure on us. Credit goes to their bowlers. We aim to improve on this," Zadran stated.
The captain mentioned that the team had previously discussed strategies to elevate their scores from around 150-160 to competitive totals exceeding 200, but they were unable to execute these plans effectively during the match.
"After the first game, we considered how to elevate our scores to 200-plus," he noted.
Zadran stressed the importance of adopting a more aggressive mindset if Afghanistan hopes to compete with top international teams.
"We need to instill that intent within the team. We didn't manage to do that. To defeat the strongest teams on the international stage, we must enhance our performance in this area," he added.
He also pointed out that the limited number of international matches poses a challenge for the team, suggesting that more games would facilitate player development.
"This is only our second game this year, and we haven't played many matches. With more opportunities, we will improve," Zadran remarked.
In the match itself, India triumphed over Afghanistan by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After choosing to bowl first, India limited Afghanistan to a score of 159/8, with Nitish Kumar Reddy taking 3 wickets for 24 runs and Arshdeep Singh claiming two wickets. Ibrahim Zadran was the top scorer for Afghanistan with 37 runs, while Rashid Khan contributed 28 runs off just 16 balls.
In response, India got off to a strong start, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma accumulating 82 runs during the powerplay. Samson scored an impressive 57 runs off 22 balls, while Abhishek added 39 runs from 19 deliveries. Although Rashid Khan took three wickets, including those of Samson, Abhishek, and Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (38*) and Tilak Varma (15*) ensured India reached 163/3 in just 14.5 overs.
