Adrien Rabiot Voices Concerns Over World Cup Pitch Quality After France's Victory
Concerns Raised About Playing Surface
In New Jersey, following France's impressive 3-1 victory against Senegal in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener, midfielder Adrien Rabiot expressed worries regarding the quality of the pitch at the New York/New Jersey stadium. Rabiot, who contributed an assist during the match, noted that the playing surface felt unusually hard and artificial.
He remarked, "The pitch... I don't even know if you can call it that. It felt more like an artificial surface — quite hard and quite rigid," during a press conference.
France's head coach, Didier Deschamps, also shared his thoughts on the pitch conditions, labeling it a unique surface. He speculated, "I think there’s probably concrete underneath; it’s very short fibres."
France's Dominant Start to World Cup Campaign
France kicked off their Group I journey with a commanding performance, led by Kylian Mbappe, as they faced a resilient Senegal team. This victory marked a strong beginning for the 2018 World Cup champions, who aim to maintain their momentum throughout the group stage.
Mbappe's remarkable brace not only helped secure the win but also elevated him above Lionel Messi in the all-time World Cup scoring rankings. This match confirmed Mbappe as France's all-time leading scorer, showcasing his prowess in a tournament where Les Bleus are seen as formidable contenders following their previous triumph and a runner-up finish in 2022.
The first half was tightly contested, but the breakthrough came shortly after the hour mark when Michael Olise set up Mbappe, who finished with composure to score the opener.
Key Moments of the Match
Bradley Barcola, who came off the bench, doubled France's lead in the 79th minute with a delicate lob over Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Although Ibrahim Mbaye managed to pull one back for Senegal, Mbappe sealed the match with a spectacular 30-yard strike deep into stoppage time.
Ibrahim Mbaye was the sole scorer for Senegal. With his two goals, Mbappe reached a total of 14 World Cup goals, tying him with Germany's Gerd Muller and placing him third in the all-time scoring list, just behind Miroslav Klose (16) and Brazil's Ronaldo (15).
Starting the match tied with the legendary Pele at 12 World Cup goals, Mbappe's outstanding performance propelled him into third place outright. His brace also increased his international goal tally to 58, surpassing Olivier Giroud's record of 57 goals, making him France's highest-ever scorer.
Mbappe has now scored in three consecutive World Cups and continues to be a standout player in the ongoing tournament. Notably, he became only the second player, after England's Geoff Hurst in 1966, to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final during the thrilling 3-3 draw against Argentina in Qatar four years ago.
