Aditya Birla Group Acquires RCB in Historic IPL Franchise Deal

Record-Breaking Acquisition of RCB

The Aditya Birla Group, a prominent multinational corporation led by billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla, has successfully acquired the rights to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a landmark deal, making it the most expensive franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This consortium includes notable American sports investors such as David Blitzer, the private equity firm Blackstone, and the Times of India, according to various reports.

The franchise was sold for an astonishing $1.8 billion (approximately ₹16,896 crores at the current exchange rate), marking a historic moment in cricket as it surpasses the previous record of $1.63 billion (around ₹15,300 crores) for the Rajasthan Royals, which was also finalized today under the leadership of Kal Somani. Both RCB and RR are now the first teams in IPL history to be valued at over a billion dollars.

Previously, Sanjiv Goenka had purchased the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for $940 million (₹7,050 crores) in 2022. The new consortium will take over from Diageo, whose Indian arm, United Spirits, previously owned the franchise. Diageo had acquired RCB for $111.6 million (₹446 crores) before the inaugural IPL season in 2008. This latest transaction indicates a staggering 16-fold increase in value over 18 years.

While this marks the Birla family's first venture into sports ownership, David Blitzer is already an established figure in the sports world, holding stakes in teams across various leagues, including the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), New Jersey Devils (NHL), Crystal Palace (EPL), Cleveland Guardians (MLB), and Real Salt Lake (MLS).
