The iconic Adelaide Oval is in discussions to potentially host a regular-season match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. Historically, IPL matches have been held in locations like South Africa and the UAE during election periods and the COVID-19 pandemic, making this a significant opportunity for Australia. As reported by Sen.com, the initiative is being led by Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and South Australian Cricket Association chief Will Rayner, who have already begun talks with relevant stakeholders.
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet been formally approached, a proposal is expected to be submitted soon. This proposal may include a reciprocal arrangement, allowing a Big Bash League match to take place in Chennai. The Adelaide Oval management is optimistic about the IPL match's potential success, citing the city's strong sporting culture. The venue has previously hosted major events, including LIV Golf and the AFL's Gather Round.
According to reports, the match could occur in March, coinciding with the start of the Australian football season and the IPL calendar. Informal consultations have involved key political and administrative figures, including South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, federal trade minister Don Farrell, and Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird. Additionally, Tourism South Australia has shown early support for the initiative. However, it is important to note that these discussions are still in the preliminary stages, and several approvals are required.
