Melbourne, Australia - January 1: Adam Gilchrist, a legendary figure in Australian cricket, has shared a health update regarding his former teammate Damien Martyn, who is currently hospitalized due to meningitis. Gilchrist mentioned that the 54-year-old Martyn is still receiving treatment and noted, "There are some positive signs emerging from the various tests he is undergoing."


Martyn, celebrated as one of Australia's finest cricketers during the 2000s, has been in a Queensland hospital since falling ill on Boxing Day. Reports about his condition surfaced on Tuesday evening, indicating that he had been placed in an induced coma.


During an appearance on FOX Cricket, Gilchrist stated, "He remains in the hospital. More information will be available as it comes in, but there have certainly been some encouraging signs in the last 24 hours from the tests he's undergoing."


He added, "There has been an outpouring of interest and support. A remarkable player and a great person. I sincerely hope he continues to recover."


A representative from Gold Coast Health confirmed on Wednesday, as reported by a Media House, that "Damien Martyn is still in serious condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital."


Martyn's cricket career spanned from 1992 to 2006, during which he played 67 Tests, 208 ODIs, and four T20Is for Australia. He is often regarded as one of the greatest ODI finishers in the sport's history.


Known for his exceptional stroke play, Martyn concluded his Test career with 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, including 13 centuries and 23 fifties. In ODIs, he amassed 5,346 runs at an average of 40.80, with five centuries and 37 half-centuries.


Notably, he was named Player of the Series during Australia's last Test series victory in India, scoring 444 runs in four Tests at an average of 55.50, which included two centuries and two fifties. His best score of 114 came in the third Test in Nagpur, contributing to a 342-run victory that secured the series for Australia.


Martyn is also a two-time ICC Cricket World Cup champion, having won titles in 1999 and 2003. He played a crucial role in the 2003 final against India, scoring 88 runs off just 84 balls and accumulating 323 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of 64.60, including four fifties. Additionally, he was a key player in the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy in India, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer with 241 runs in five innings at an average of 80.33, which included two fifties.
