Abhishek Sharma Shines with Record Century in T20I Against New Zealand
A Stellar Performance by Abhishek Sharma
In Gurugram, Haryana, former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan hailed Abhishek Sharma as a "phenomenon" following his explosive century of 113 runs off just 38 balls against New Zealand in the third T20I. This remarkable innings, which included 11 sixes and nine fours, led India to a six-wicket victory at Wellington's Henry Stadium, securing a 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
After the match, Wassan commended Abhishek's clear mindset and credited Yuvraj Singh for influencing his fearless style of play. He remarked, "Abhishek Sharma is a phenomenon. His clarity of thought is impressive. Yuvraj Singh has mentored him well, and this fearless approach reflects the maturity of Indian cricket. These players have been given the freedom to express themselves."
Support for Young Talent
Wassan also expressed his support for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored a brisk 45 runs off 19 balls in the same match. He urged the cricket community to allow the young talent time to grow without imposing heavy expectations. "Sooryavanshi is a class player and the future of Indian cricket. We must mentor him properly and focus on his fitness, avoiding harsh judgments on his performances," he stated.
Both Abhishek and Sooryavanshi provided a strong start for India, reaching 118 runs without losing a wicket during the Powerplay. Abhishek achieved his half-century in just 15 balls and completed his century in 35 deliveries.
Match Highlights
Matthew Fisher dismissed Sooryavanshi for 45 runs, while Kyle Jamieson took out Abhishek for 113. India successfully chased down the target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs, finishing with 40 balls to spare. Earlier, New Zealand set a target with Daryl Mitchell scoring an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls and Bevon Jacobs contributing 39 runs off 23 balls. Finn Allen also added 40 runs off 25 balls, while Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy each took a wicket.
Despite India's dominant performance in the T20I series, Wassan warned against underestimating New Zealand, suggesting they could pose a challenge in the upcoming ODI and Test formats. "New Zealand is a dangerous team with talent, and if India manages to win in Test cricket there, it would be a far greater achievement than this T20 series victory," he concluded.
