Historic Performance by Abhigyan Kundu

Dubai [UAE], December 16: In a remarkable display of batting, India’s Under-19 wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu made headlines today by scoring a stunning double century. His exceptional performance propelled the India U19 team to a formidable total of 408 runs for the loss of 7 wickets against Malaysia U19 during the Group A match of the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup 2025 at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai.

After winning the toss, Malaysia opted to field first. The Indian innings was significantly bolstered by Kundu’s extraordinary double-century, marking him as the first Indian player and only the second in history to achieve this feat in a Youth ODI.

Despite losing early wickets, including captain Ayush Mhatre (14 off 7) and Vihaan Malhotra (7 off 14), India’s top order laid a strong foundation. Vaibhav Suryavanshi (50 off 26) and Vedant Trivedi (90 off 106) played crucial roles in stabilizing the innings after the initial setbacks, with India reaching 87-3 by the 11th over.

Upon entering the crease after Suryavanshi's dismissal, Kundu immediately began scoring aggressively. He formed a remarkable partnership of 209 runs off 181 balls with Trivedi, followed by an explosive 87 runs off just 36 balls with Kanishk Chouhan. Kundu's innings included 17 boundaries and nine sixes.

Kundu reached his fifty in a mere 44 balls and celebrated his century in just 80 balls, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. He completed his historic double century in just 121 balls, showcasing a variety of impressive strokes.

His unbeaten score of 209 not only set a challenging target of 409 runs for Malaysia but also broke Ambati Rayudu’s previous record for the highest score by an Indian in Under-19 ODIs, which stood at 177*. The only other player to score a double century in Youth ODIs is South Africa’s Jorich Van Schalkwyk, who achieved 212 runs against Zimbabwe U19s in 2025.
