Aaqib Javed Defends Pakistan Cricket Amid T20 World Cup Disappointment
Aaqib Javed's Perspective on Pakistan's Cricket Performance
Aaqib Javed has declined to acknowledge that Pakistan's cricket is in ruins, despite a poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, where the team failed to advance to the semifinals. This marks the fourth consecutive ICC tournament where Pakistan has struggled to make a significant impact. Aaqib pointed out that there is a tendency in Pakistan to seek a scapegoat after every loss, which he believes is an ineffective strategy. “In our environment, there is always a call for punishment when the team falters,” Aaqib stated during a press conference. “This pattern has been evident in previous tournaments like the World Cup, Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup. Each time we lose, there’s an extreme reaction demanding changes in the team, coaching staff, or selectors. The frequency with which we change coaches and selectors is unprecedented in global cricket. We need to move beyond this blame culture.”
Aaqib also reflected on Pakistan's performance over the past 18 months, noting that the team achieved victories that many did not anticipate. “Since my arrival, we have accomplished remarkable feats, such as defeating England in a Test series, which was previously thought impossible. We also won an ODI series in Australia after 27 years and achieved a 3-0 victory against South Africa in ODIs, a first in history. We nearly won the Centurion Test, which we should have secured,” he remarked. However, he expressed disappointment regarding the team's performance in the ICC Champions Trophy held at home. “The Champions Trophy was indeed a disaster,” he admitted. “Up until that point, the team's performance had been commendable.”
Aaqib's Unusual Defense: 8-0 Against India in World Cups
Regarding the T20 World Cup campaign, Aaqib acknowledged that Pakistan lost a crucial match against India but defended the outcome, stating that even the most skilled captains have struggled to defeat India in World Cup matches. “The India-Pakistan match holds significant importance for us, yet we have never triumphed over India in a World Cup. The record stands at 8-0 (8-1 in T20 World Cups). The finest captains since 1975 have faced them, and we have yet to secure a victory; the result remains 8-0. Let’s put that aside,” he explained. He continued, “We made it to the second round, losing only one match against England. Was there anything else that transpired? Winning against Sri Lanka by the required margin was not feasible. We lost just one game and missed out due to net run rate. It’s not catastrophic to claim that our cricket has been destroyed.”
