Political Engagement in Sports: A Historical Perspective

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann defended the increasing representation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members within the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). He asserted that political participation in sports organizations is neither a novel concept nor inappropriate, especially when it serves the interests of sports development.

Mann referenced notable figures like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Raninder Singh, and Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, who have previously held influential roles in various sports organizations.

His comments followed the recent election of Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, the Sangrur MP, as the PCA's general secretary. Hayer, who was elected unopposed, is thought to be the first sitting MP to assume this role, succeeding Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, who resigned shortly after his own unopposed election.

Political Shift in PCA Leadership

With AAP officials now in significant positions such as president, treasurer, and vice-president, the PCA—affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)—has experienced a notable political transformation in its leadership.

In response to criticism regarding alleged 'infiltration' by AAP members, Mann questioned, 'Isn’t it beneficial if AAP representatives are part of the system? Are they 'goons'? We will have our representatives in the system, and those committed to the welfare of sports will step forward.'

Commitment to Transparency and Development

Mann further addressed concerns about AAP representatives infiltrating the system, stating, 'Are they detectives? If any incidents arise where they favor relatives or others, that will be scrutinized to prevent chaos.'

He emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and efficiency, asserting, 'We are not part of the problem. Those who understand how to promote sports welfare will be prioritized. AAP representatives will engage with every sport association to ensure smooth and transparent operations for the benefit of players and the state.'

Investing in Punjab's Sports Future

During a media interaction, the Chief Minister also highlighted the AAP government's developmental initiatives over the last four years. He commended Punjab's sporting accomplishments and reiterated the state's dedication to enhancing grassroots infrastructure.

Regarding the proposed Sports Nurseries and Hostels outlined in the 2023 Sports Policy, Mann mentioned that these would be developed in phases, particularly in districts with a significant number of villages, as part of the ongoing effort to expand sports infrastructure.
