Historic IPL Final Scheduled for Ahmedabad

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) final is set to take place on May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking a significant moment as two teams vie for the championship title in the 19th edition of this prestigious cricket league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the playoff schedule on May 6, confirming that the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium will host the first qualifier on May 26, followed by the eliminator and second qualifier at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on May 27 and May 29, respectively.

Ahmedabad's Record as IPL Final Host

Ahmedabad Set To Create History In The 2026 IPL Final

This upcoming final will be a historic occasion as it marks the fourth time Ahmedabad has hosted the IPL finale. The Narendra Modi Stadium, recognized as the largest cricket stadium globally, previously held the finals in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Although the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was initially slated to host the final due to Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory last year, the BCCI decided to relocate the match due to specific requirements from local authorities that exceeded their established guidelines.

With this event, Ahmedabad will become the first city to host the IPL final four times, surpassing Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, which has hosted the title match three times.

Among the finals hosted in Ahmedabad, the venue was officially assigned only in 2023, as the Gujarat Titans won the tournament in 2022. The final was moved from Kolkata to Ahmedabad last year due to rain threats in Kolkata, which had caused a temporary halt in the tournament. In 2022, the league was conducted in a bio-secure environment due to COVID-19, with the league stage held across four venues in Maharashtra and playoffs in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Playoff Venues for 2026 IPL

3 Venues for Playoffs

This year's playoffs will be uniquely held across three venues, a departure from the usual two-venue format. Typically, the first qualifier and eliminator occur in the same city, with the second venue hosting the second qualifier and final. Since the playoff system's introduction in 2011, this marks only the fourth time that three different venues will host the four playoff matches, following similar instances in 2012, 2017, and 2019. Notably, the 2014 edition featured four different venues for all playoff games.
