Cricket South Africa Allows Star Players to Stay in IPL Until Finals

Cricket South Africa has made a pivotal decision to allow its star players to remain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) until the tournament concludes. Initially, CSA had mandated that players return by May 26 to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia. This change comes as a relief to IPL franchises, ensuring key players like Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram can compete without interruption. The decision reflects a shift in priorities, allowing for better preparation for the upcoming international commitments while maximizing player participation in the IPL.

CSA's Decision to Support IPL Participation

In a surprising change of heart, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced that its prominent players will be permitted to remain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) until the tournament concludes. Previously, the organization had mandated that all players return by May 26 to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, scheduled for June 11 at Lord's.

This initial directive raised concerns among IPL franchises, as eight significant South African players were part of teams competing for playoff spots. However, CSA has now revised its position. Enoch Nkwe, CSA's Director of Cricket, informed The Sydney Morning Herald that preparations for the WTC final will begin only after the IPL wraps up on June 3.

This alteration allows players such as Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs to participate in the IPL without interruption.

This timely decision is advantageous for the teams involved. Following a brief suspension of IPL 2025 due to tensions at the India-Pakistan border, the tournament's restart on May 17 required all available talent. With the final set for June 3, CSA's previous return date posed a significant challenge. Now, players and franchises can relax with this updated timeline.

Initial Restrictions and Subsequent Clarity

At first, CSA maintained a strict approach. Head coach Shukri Conrad confirmed an agreement with the BCCI, which required South African players to return by May 26. This meant that the Proteas stars would miss the playoffs due to international commitments. CSA had organized a training camp in Arundel, England, starting May 31, which included a warm-up match against Zimbabwe from June 3 to 6, ahead of the final.

May 25 marks the beginning of the international cricket calendar, prompting CSA to ensure its squad had ample time to regroup and prepare. However, the revised IPL schedule clashed with these plans, necessitating a reevaluation. Ultimately, cricket logic prevailed.

With the decision reversed, the eight South African players selected for the WTC final—Rabada (GT), Ngidi (RCB), Markram (LSG), Rickelton & Bosch (MI), Jansen (PBKS), Stubbs (DC), and Mulder (SRH)—will now remain until the IPL concludes, a significant departure from the earlier deadline-driven exit.
