Cricket Ireland Plans Euro Nations Cup for 2027
Introduction to the Euro Nations Cup
Cricket Ireland is set to introduce the "Euro Nations Cup," with Chair Brian MacNeice expressing optimism that the tournament could commence as early as 2027, as reported by a sports news outlet.
The proposed Euro Nations Cup aims to mirror the Asia Cup, featuring European teams such as England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. The tournament is expected to adopt a T20 format, including matches for both men's and women's teams.
MacNeice's Vision for the Tournament
"This idea has been under discussion with various stakeholders for quite some time," MacNeice stated during the announcement of Ireland's home international fixtures for 2026. "I am genuinely passionate about this initiative and firmly believe in its potential," he added.
"The discussions have progressed significantly, and I am now more confident that it will materialize. There are multiple stakeholders involved, and I anticipate the tournament will kick off in the summer of 2027. The specific format and details will be revealed soon, likely within the next few months," he mentioned.
Broadcasting and Stakeholder Engagement
"We are currently in talks with various stakeholders and parties involved. To clarify, this will be a joint men's and women's event. It is still early to approach broadcasters until everything is finalized, but we expect there will be interest from broadcasters," MacNeice noted.
Ireland's Upcoming International Schedule
In addition to the Euro Nations Cup, Cricket Ireland has unveiled a comprehensive home schedule for its men's and women's teams, which includes two T20 matches against India in June.
Men's Home Fixtures
The men's season will kick off with a match against the 2021 ICC World Test Champions, New Zealand, in Belfast from May 27-30. This will be followed by a two-match T20I series against India from June 26-28. Additionally, Ireland will host Afghanistan for five ODIs from August 5 to 14.
Women's Schedule and World Cup Participation
The women's team is preparing for the fourth edition of the ICC Women's Championship. As part of this cycle, Ireland will host teams like India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the West Indies, while also touring England, Australia, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka. The schedule will commence with a home series against the West Indies in July, followed by away tours to England in September and Zimbabwe in early 2027.
Moreover, Ireland will participate in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in England and Wales, starting June 12. They are placed in Group B alongside England, defending champions New Zealand, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
