Cricket Australia Reveals Men's Central Contracts for 2026/27 Season
Cricket Australia Unveils Central Contracts for Upcoming Season
On Wednesday, Cricket Australia (CA) disclosed its list of central contracts for the men's 2026/27 season, in accordance with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Australian team is set to face Bangladesh in a two-Test home series in August, followed by matches against South Africa, New Zealand, and India. This busy schedule will be crucial in determining their qualification for a third consecutive World Test Championship final.
Significant Changes in the Contract List
The newly announced central contract list features several surprising omissions. Notably, Glenn Maxwell, a star all-rounder who has retired from ODIs and has limited prospects in red-ball cricket at 37, was left out. Additionally, opener Sam Konstas was dropped due to a difficult run of form. Fast bowler Jhye Richardson, who is returning from injury and has recently been recalled for Test matches, also did not secure a central contract.
Included in the contracted list for the 2026/27 season are Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins, along with seasoned players Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Mitchell Starc. Other key performers like Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head also made the list. Emerging talent Jake Weatherald has secured a contract, while pace bowler Brendan Doggett earned his first central deal following impressive performances.
Strategic Selection for a Demanding Schedule
Currently, the 2023 ICC World Test Championship winners are leading the standings after a 4-1 series victory over England in the Ashes. Selection chair George Bailey noted that many contract decisions were influenced by the upcoming busy schedule.
"The next 12 months will feature a packed Test schedule with various conditions and challenges," Bailey stated, as reported by the ICC. "This is reflected in the contract list, which emphasizes Test and multi-format players for this cycle.
"Given the series ahead, we recognize the need to utilize players beyond those contracted. This year, more than ever, it is crucial to collaborate closely with states to ensure players are prepared for international cricket when opportunities arise."
