Cricket Australia (CA) is reportedly preparing to offer Test captain Pat Cummins a substantial three-year contract valued at AUD $12 million. This initiative aims to ensure his continued participation in international cricket and deter him from pursuing lucrative offers from the IPL and other T20 leagues.
Currently, Cummins is playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, having been retained for INR 18 crore prior to the mini-auction. Over the past two seasons with SRH in 2024 and 2025, he has reportedly earned INR 38.50 crore.
By the conclusion of the current IPL season, Cummins' total earnings from his tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad are projected to surpass INR 50 crore. Given that the IPL is the premier T20 league globally, elite players like Cummins often face challenging decisions between franchise earnings and national responsibilities, prompting Cricket Australia to extend record contracts to retain their top talent.
Cricket Australia Takes Action Against IPL Offers
With T20 leagues attracting top international cricketers through lucrative short-term contracts, Cricket Australia is proactively working to keep its leading players focused on national commitments. According to reports, Pat Cummins has been presented with a significant contract extension by the Australian cricket board.
The contract aims to secure Cummins' availability for all formats of international cricket, offering AUD $12 million (approximately INR 82 crore), which translates to AUD $4 million (INR 27.4 crore) annually until 2029.
This offer marks a notable increase from his previous contract, which earned him AUD $2.5-3 million per year, making him the highest-paid cricketer in Australia. Cricket Australia's generous proposal to Cummins appears to be a strategic response to the financial allure of the IPL and other global T20 franchises, ensuring that he remains dedicated to national duties across all formats.
Commitment to Fair Compensation and Player Security
Cricket Australia is emphasizing the importance of financial security and fair compensation for its elite players, recognizing their long-term contributions across various formats. James Allsopp, CA’s Head of Cricket, affirmed the board's dedication to rewarding long-term performers, highlighting that players like Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne are being compensated for their sustained service to Australia.
He stated, 'Absolutely. They’ve earned the right; they’ve been long-term performers for Australia across formats for a long period of time. There’s only so far you can take them under the current constraints. That’s definitely a priority at the moment.'
The report regarding the lucrative offers to Cummins, Head, and Labuschagne comes ahead of a busy summer for Australia, which includes 21 Test matches, notably a five-match series in India scheduled for January-February 2027. This highlights the necessity of keeping top players engaged for a demanding international calendar.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, Cricket Australia is focused on ensuring its leading players remain fit and committed to the national team in preparation for the tournament.
