Controversy Erupts as LSG Staff Member Spotted Using Phone During IPL Match
IPL 2026 Match Overview
During the IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Chepauk, a significant controversy arose when an LSG staff member was seen using a mobile phone on May 10.
After CSK captain opted to bat first, LSG managed to score a commendable 203 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs. Opener Josh Inglis was the standout performer, smashing 83 runs off just 33 deliveries, which included 10 fours and 6 sixes, achieving a remarkable strike rate of 257.58. Shahbaz Ahmed contributed with an unbeaten 43 runs from 25 balls, hitting 3 sixes and an equal number of fours.
Bowling Performance
For CSK, Jamie Overton was the leading bowler, taking 3 wickets for 36 runs with an economy rate of 9.00 over 4 overs. Anshul Kamboj also made an impact, securing 2 wickets while conceding 47 runs at an economy of 11.80 in his 4-over spell.
LSG's Dugout Controversy
As LSG commenced their bowling innings, a staff member was caught on camera using a mobile phone in the dugout, a clear violation of the BCCI's anti-corruption rules.
A viral image circulated on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), showing the LSG staff member engaged in a phone conversation while seated with other team officials during live gameplay. This incident occurred shortly after an LSG batter hit a boundary, coinciding with a replay of Mitchell Marsh's shot.
Previous Incidents and Reactions
This incident marks the second occurrence of an IPL team member being caught using a mobile phone in the dugout. Earlier in April, Rajasthan Royals manager Romi Bhinder faced a fine of INR 1 lakh for a similar violation during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
According to PMOA regulations, the use of mobile phones by coaching and support staff in the dugout is strictly forbidden once the match begins.
Fan Reactions and Concerns
The image of the LSG staff member using a mobile phone has ignited a heated discussion on social media, with fans expressing their concerns regarding repeated breaches of IPL protocols and the implications for match integrity.
Many users on X voiced their disbelief over the blatant disregard for rules, comparing it to the earlier incident involving the Rajasthan Royals and criticizing the BCCI for not enforcing stricter measures to maintain the integrity of the matches.
Potential Consequences
If the BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) finds the LSG staff member guilty of this violation, he could face severe penalties, including a hefty fine and a formal reprimand.
Currently, LSG is struggling at the bottom of the points table, with only three wins and seven losses, accumulating a total of six points.
