Controversial Catch in IPL 2026: Kohli's Reaction to Holder's Dismissal of Patidar
IPL 2026: A Match Filled with Controversy
The IPL 2026 match between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru became a hot topic after Jason Holder's catch of Rajat Patidar left Virat Kohli visibly stunned at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 30.
Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill opted to bat first, and RCB's opening duo of Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell got off to a rapid start, with Kohli scoring 21 runs off Kagiso Rabada in a single over. However, Mohammed Siraj soon dismissed Bethell for just 5 runs, and Rabada followed up by taking Kohli's wicket for 28, leaving RCB at 35/2.
Devdutt Padikkal then partnered with Rajat Patidar, putting together a 44-run partnership for the third wicket. However, the Titans struck again when Arshad Khan dismissed Padikkal, thanks to Holder's controversial catch near the boundary.
Holder's Catch Sparks Debate
The dismissal of Rajat Patidar ignited a debate as Jason Holder's catch raised questions about whether the ball was caught cleanly or if it touched the ground. This incident occurred during the 8th over when Patidar attempted a pull shot but got a top edge off Arshad Khan's delivery, sending the ball towards deep backward square leg.
Holder, stationed at deep backward square leg, dashed forward and executed a low catch, narrowly avoiding a collision with Kagiso Rabada, who was also pursuing the ball.

The third umpire reviewed the catch and upheld the on-field decision, declaring Patidar out. However, Kohli, who was in the dugout, expressed his disbelief and argued with the fourth umpire, suggesting the ball had touched the ground.
RCB's head coach Andy Flower was also seen disputing the decision, indicating that the ball may have made contact with the ground before the catch was completed.
Social Media Reaction to the Decision
The decision made by the third umpire regarding Holder's catch sparked a flurry of discussions on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter). Fans and cricket analysts questioned the validity of the catch, with many asserting that the ball had indeed touched the ground before being caught.
Numerous users took to their accounts to voice their opinions, calling for clearer camera angles for such critical boundary-line catches.
Irrespective of the teams, the game should be played fairly. This isn’t right; the ball clearly touched the ground, and Jason Holder wasn’t fully in control of the catch.
Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the catch should have been ruled not out due to the lack of control and the ball's contact with the ground.
Match Outcome and Bowling Performance
Ultimately, Royal Challengers Bengaluru were bowled out for 155 runs in 19.2 overs. Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer with the bat, scoring 40 runs off 24 balls. Other contributors included Romario Shepherd (17), Venkatesh Iyer (12), and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but they couldn't propel the team to a competitive total.
For Gujarat Titans, Arshad Khan was the star bowler, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs in 6.2 overs. Jason Holder and Rashid Khan also made significant contributions, each claiming two wickets, as GT maintained a strong grip on the match.
