Conor McGregor's Comeback Ends in Injury at UFC 329
UFC 329: A Night of High Hopes and Disappointment
The Ultimate Fighting Championship hosted an electrifying UFC 329 pay-per-view event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the nights of July 11 and 12 IST. The highlight of the evening was the much-anticipated return of Conor McGregor, the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously. After a five-year absence from the octagon, McGregor faced off against Max Holloway, a former featherweight and BMF champion, in a rematch of their initial encounter from 13 years ago. Fans were eager to witness the 'Return of Mac,' but the main event ultimately did not meet the high expectations set by the thrilling bouts earlier in the night.
McGregor's Injury Overshadows His Comeback
Five years prior, McGregor endured a severe leg injury during his trilogy match against Dustin Poirier, resulting in a tibial/fibular fracture in his left leg. Despite this setback, he returned to the octagon, but his comeback was cut short when he appeared to injure his knee while attempting a leaping kick shortly after the first round commenced. Referee Mike Beltran halted the match as McGregor struggled to maintain his footing in the cage.
In an effort to make a strong impression, McGregor initiated the fight with an aggressive leaping kick. Unfortunately, he landed awkwardly on his right knee, which buckled under his weight. Despite his determination to continue, he collapsed onto the canvas moments later. Seizing the opportunity, Holloway moved in and delivered a flurry of powerful right hands while standing over the incapacitated McGregor. Recognizing McGregor's inability to continue, Holloway displayed commendable sportsmanship by stepping back and turning to face the referee.
