Concerns Surround Gukesh Dommaraju's Chess Performance Amid Criticism
Gukesh Dommaraju Faces Scrutiny from Chess Legends
The recent performance of Gukesh Dommaraju has raised significant concerns among chess enthusiasts and experts alike. The reigning World Chess Champion has faced intense scrutiny, particularly from renowned chess figures. Russian Grandmasters Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov have been vocal in their criticism, with Karpov suggesting that Gukesh's championship title was somewhat fortuitous, stating, "Gukesh became world champion by accident because he was not supposed to win the match against Ding Liren… Officially, it’s Gukesh, but because Carlsen stopped playing.”
Kasperov, while acknowledging Gukesh's victory, remarked that it is difficult to label him as the strongest player globally. However, support for Gukesh has emerged from within the chess community. During the FIDE Candidates 2026 event in Cyprus, Andrey Esipenko expressed his confidence in the young Indian Grandmaster, asserting that he is indeed a “real world champion” despite his recent challenges.
Esipenko stated, “I think Gukesh is a real World Champion, of course. He qualified, had an incredible Candidates Tournament, and played amazingly at the Olympiad too.” He acknowledged Gukesh's current struggles but emphasized his youth and potential, saying, “In my opinion, he really is a very strong and prominent chess player.”
Furthermore, Esipenko commented on former world champion Ding Liren, noting that he has not participated in any Classical games since 2025 and appears to be in a challenging mental state following his defeat in the 2024 World Championship match. Esipenko expressed his hopes for Liren's swift recovery and return to form, recognizing him as a great player.
As the Candidates Tournament progresses, Gukesh's performance continues to be closely monitored, but endorsements like Esipenko's indicate a strong belief in the Indian Grandmaster's future potential.
