Concerns Rise Over Player Welfare in Indian Women's Football Amid IWL 2 Controversy
Player Welfare Issues in Focus
On Tuesday, new worries regarding the welfare of players in Indian women's football came to light after a video surfaced, allegedly featuring members of Suruchi Sangha during the ongoing Indian Womenâs League 2 (IWL 2). The footage, which gained traction on social media, purportedly showed players expressing dissatisfaction over insufficient financial and logistical support for their travel to the event. The athletes claimed they were allocated only Rs 125 each by the club to manage expenses over two days. âEach player has been given 125 rupees by our club, and when we called the manager, he said, âWe can only give that muchâ. But how will we survive with just 125 rupees? Even a biscuit costs 20 rupees and lunch is for 120. They could have sent an official, then they could have paid,â the players reportedly stated in the video.

The video quickly went viral, prompting numerous football enthusiasts to share it and voice their concerns regarding the apparent lack of support for players in a national women's tournament. Additional claims circulating on social media suggested that some players did not have confirmed travel tickets, and there were questions about the absence of a team manager during the trip. However, these allegations could not be independently verified at the time of this report.
Neither Suruchi Sangha nor the tournament organizers have provided an official statement addressing the claims made in the video. This incident has once again brought to light the ongoing issues surrounding infrastructure, funding, and player welfare in Indian women's football, especially at the grassroots and lower-division levels.
In recent years, women's football in India has gained more visibility through the Indian Womenâs League, with improved youth performances and increased fan engagement. Nonetheless, challenges related to travel arrangements, salaries, accommodation, and logistical support continue to arise in domestic competitions. The viral video has sparked further discussions about the standards and support systems available to women footballers in national tournaments and whether clubs and administrators are adequately ensuring professional conditions for the players.
