Concerns Rise Over Jaipur Polo Grounds Amid Jindal Steel Indian Open Polo Championship
Historic Venue Under Threat
The Jindal Steel Indian Open Polo Championship final not only showcased thrilling polo action but also highlighted significant concerns regarding the potential eviction of the iconic Jaipur Polo Grounds.
Rajeev Shukla, a Congress MP and Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with BJP MP Naveen Jindal, voiced their apprehensions regarding the proposed eviction.
The Land and Development Office (L&DO), part of the Ministry of Urban Affairs, has issued a notice to the Delhi Race Club and the Indian Polo Association (IPA), demanding the venue's eviction, which has sparked outrage within the polo community.
Approximately 2,000 spectators attended the final, which featured numerous notable figures, including business leaders and politicians like Rajeev Shukla.
In an interview, Shukla described the situation as "very serious," emphasizing the historical significance of the venue and warning against its takeover. He stated, "This is a historic polo ground; if the government wants to take it, that would be very wrong... Polo would come to an end here... The government should reconsider this decision."
Sawai Padmanabh Singh, a member of the Jaipur royal family and player for Jaipur Optiemus Achievers, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the global importance of polo and the Jaipur Polo Ground's esteemed status. He remarked, "Polo is truly a gift from India to the world... Established by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Ji, this ground has been at the heart of the sport for over a century."
Singh further noted the venue's significance as a green space in Delhi and urged the polo community to unite in its preservation for future generations.
Naveen Jindal, also addressing the issue, stressed the cultural and historical relevance of the grounds, stating, "Polo is a proud heritage of our country, and it is important that we continue to nurture and promote it for future generations." He recalled the legendary 1922 match between Jodhpur and Patiala, which attracted over 150,000 spectators.
Jindal added, "This ground has welcomed some of the most eminent leaders of the country and remains the heart of Indian polo as the home of the Indian Polo Association. We have written to the Government of India and are hopeful that the sentiments of polo lovers will be understood."
On the field, the final was a thrilling contest, with Jindal Panther battling hard before succumbing 9-12 to Jaipur Optiemus Achievers. After trailing early, Jindal Panther made a commendable comeback, narrowing the score to 7-8 by the end of the fourth chukker.
Juan Gris Zavaleta led the charge for Jindal Panthers with seven goals, supported by Ramiro Zavaleta and Siddhant Sharma. Despite their efforts, Jaipur Optiemus Achievers maintained their lead, with Alejo Aramburu contributing significantly to their victory.
Reflecting on the match, Naveen Jindal expressed pride in his team's performance, stating, "We were hoping for a win today, but full credit to Jaipur Optiemus Achievers for the way they played. It was a highly competitive game and decided by small margins." He emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and the enjoyment of the spectators as a victory in itself.
