Yuma's Pickleball Tournament Supports Local Causes
A recent pickleball tournament held at the Cocopah RV and Golf Resort in Yuma attracted participants of various ages, all coming together for a noble cause. Elizabeth Huyck, the Tournament Director, praised the sport's inclusivity, stating, “It's something that all levels can play, and the turnout has been magnificent.” This event, the Sunrise Optimist Pickleball Fundraiser, has grown significantly in its third year.
Denise Davis, President of the Sunrise Optimist Club, emphasized the fundraiser's positive influence on the local community, noting, “They do phenomenal things within our community, and all this money stays in Yuma County, so it's wonderful.” Organizers anticipate raising up to $10,000 this year, which will benefit athletes and programs associated with Special Olympics Yuma.
Beyond being enjoyable, pickleball has been linked to enhanced well-being. Research indicates that engaging in pickleball can positively affect mental and physical health. Dr. Nathan Parker, who authored a relevant study, remarked, “This study shows that pickleball is not only fun, but it can also be a powerful tool for improving the physical and emotional well-being of cancer survivors.” He highlighted the success of Project Rally, which demonstrates how community initiatives can help cancer survivors remain active and foster connections, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
