Commonwealth Games 2026: Indian Athletes Gear Up for Glasgow
Overview of the Commonwealth Games 2026
Approximately 3,000 competitors from 74 nations are set to participate in 13 categories, including parasports, at the Commonwealth Games 2026, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, starting July 23. The Indian team comprises 126 athletes, with 48 women and 77 men, all vying for medals across various sports. As the 23rd edition of this event approaches in just two days, there seems to be a lack of excitement surrounding the multisport competition, primarily due to the limited number of 10 sports featured at CWG 2026. Despite ongoing efforts by sports organizations to expand the range of sports included in events like the CWG, Asian Games, and Olympics, the current lineup remains modest. Scotland will become the second country to host the Commonwealth Games twice in 12 years, following Australia, which hosted in Melbourne in 2006 and Gold Coast in 2018. Notably, Glasgow is the only city to have hosted the Games twice within this timeframe.
The 23rd edition was initially slated for Australia, with Victoria winning the bid to host the prestigious event. However, after preparations began in August 2022, the state withdrew its bid 11 months later. To salvage the tournament, Glasgow was announced on April 11, 2024, as a backup host for the 2026 CWG if no other bidders emerged. The venues from the 2014 CWG will be utilized for this scaled-down version, and accommodations for athletes will be arranged in hotels and student housing at Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Glasgow.
