Columbus Sliders Make Strategic Trade

After their defeat against New Jersey 5s in the Major League Pickleball (MLP) Austin finals, the Columbus Sliders have made a notable roster change by trading for Tyra Black from the Dallas Flash. In return, they have sent promising player Danni-Elle Townsend to Dallas. Additionally, the deal includes an undisclosed cash component, with the maximum trade value capped at $200,000. Although the league had not yet officially approved the trade as of Sunday night, it is anticipated to be finalized soon.

This trade comes at a crucial moment in the season, with Columbus boasting an impressive 12-4 record. The inclusion of Black is expected to bolster their already strong lineup, enhancing their chances of defending their MLP title. Black has established successful partnerships with key players in the league, having previously teamed up with Todd and Andrei Daescu on the PPA Tour. She earned a silver medal in women’s doubles with Todd at the Indoor National Championships in January and a bronze in mixed doubles with Daescu at the Mesa Cup in February.

However, Columbus faces challenges in determining their mixed doubles pairings. It remains uncertain how they will configure their teams, especially considering Daescu's past success with both Todd and Black. Notably, Black has primarily played alongside a left-handed partner, Augie Ge, for the last three seasons, which opens up the possibility of pairing her with CJ Klinger.

For the Dallas Flash, this trade reflects a strategic shift as they navigate a challenging season, currently holding a 4-6 record. Black, who was under contract until the end of 2026, has been traded for Townsend, who can be retained until 2028. Townsend has shown promise in her rookie season, achieving a 10-6 record in women’s doubles and 9-6 in mixed doubles, indicating Dallas’ intention to rebuild with younger talent.

New Roster:
Columbus Sliders: Andrei Daescu, CJ Klinger, Alexander Crum, Parris Todd, Tyra Black, Judit Castillo.
Dallas Flash: JW Johnson, Augie Ge, Ivan Jakovljevic, Danni-Elle Townsend, Brooke Buckner, Albie Huang.
