Cody Rhodes to Defend WWE Championship Against Gunther on Smackdown
Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther: A Highly Anticipated Rematch
Cody Rhodes is set to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther in an eagerly awaited match on this week's Smackdown. Previously, Cody triumphed over Gunther during their clash in Italy, but there was controversy surrounding the outcome as Gunther's leg was reportedly under the rope. According to WWE regulations, a pin is deemed invalid if any part of a wrestler's body is touching the ropes. Despite this, the referee overlooked the situation, allowing Cody to maintain his title.
To ensure a fair outcome in their upcoming match, Gunther has requested Sami Zayn to serve as the special referee. Sami has been hinting at a potential heel turn in recent weeks, raising the stakes for the match.
There is a strong possibility that Sami may turn heel during Smackdown, potentially attacking both competitors and setting the stage for a triple-threat match at the King and Queen of the Ring event, which is set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Gunther, a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, has yet to capture the WWE Championship, while Sami, a former United States and Intercontinental Champion, has never held a World Championship in WWE.
In addition to the championship match, fans will be watching the semi-final of the Women's Queen of the Ring tournament, where Charlotte Flair will compete against Liv Morgan. The winner will advance to face IYO Sky in the final, with the victor earning a chance to challenge a world champion at SummerSlam. Notably, Morgan currently holds the world championship title.
Jey Uso is also set to face Jevon Evans in the semi-final of the King of the Ring tournament, with the winner going on to meet Oba Femi in the final at Night of Champions. Additionally, R-Truth and Damian Priest will defend the WWE World Tag Team titles against Tala Tonga and Tama Tonga.
