Chennai Super Kings' Young Star Faces Injury Setback: What’s Next for CSK?
Injury Update on Ayush Mhatre
Hyderabad: Mike Hussey, the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has shared concerning news regarding Ayush Mhatre, who sustained a hamstring injury while playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Although the full extent of the injury remains unclear, Hussey indicated that it appears serious.
Mhatre entered the game as an impact substitute for Gurjapneet Singh during the second over of CSK's chase of 195 runs, following the dismissal of opener Sanju Samson. The 18-year-old showcased his skills by scoring a rapid 30 runs off just 12 balls.
Unfortunately, Mhatre injured his hamstring while attempting a second run after the second ball of the fifth over. Although he managed to complete the run, he collapsed in pain, prompting the physio to rush to his aid. He chose to continue batting but was dismissed shortly after.
Hussey commented, "It’s a hamstring tear. We’re not sure how severe it is yet. We will likely conduct a scan tomorrow. It certainly looks quite serious. Losing him is a significant blow as he has been performing well for us."
He further noted, "While we are disappointed to lose Ayush, this situation opens the door for another player to step up, which is also exciting. We have several talented players who haven't had their chance yet, so it will be interesting to see who gets the opportunity."
Mhatre joins the growing list of injured players for CSK, which already includes bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis. Additionally, former captain MS Dhoni has yet to play this season as he recovers from a calf injury sustained during practice before the tournament.
Following a narrow 10-run defeat to SRH, CSK has slipped to seventh place in the points table, accumulating four points from six matches. Their next challenge will be against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday.
