Chennai Super Kings Triumph Over Kolkata Knight Riders Despite IPL 2025 Setbacks

CSK Secures Thrilling Win Against KKR
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may have been eliminated from playoff contention in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, but they showcased their resilience by clinching a dramatic two-wicket victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
In pursuit of a target set at 180 runs, CSK maintained their composure in the final over, with MS Dhoni once again stepping up as the team's finisher.
Dhoni Reflects on CSK's Challenging Season
During the post-match presentation, Captain MS Dhoni candidly acknowledged the difficulties faced by CSK this season.
"Few? This is just the third game we have won (laughs)," he remarked when asked about his feelings following the win, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
"There were several instances where luck was not on our side. While it's easy to get emotional and discuss pride, practicality is essential," he added.
Focus on Experimentation
Dhoni elaborated that the team's focus has shifted from merely seeking results to experimenting and evaluating player capabilities as the season progressed.
"We are concentrating on how the 25 players can fit into the team. While we aim to be competitive, we also seek to understand which batter fits where and which bowler is effective under specific conditions," he explained.
Key Contributions from Players
CSK's batting lineup performed well, particularly Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube, who were instrumental in the middle order.
"At the start, scoring was a challenge. It's encouraging to see batters showing intent; it's crucial to trust yourself and play your natural game," Dhoni stated.
"These players are currently part of our squad, so we have the chance to test them. Since we are out of the tournament, we can see how they respond. It's about assessing their approach and mental resilience," he added.
Dhoni Praises Brevis' Performance
Dhoni commended Brevis for his aggressive innings, saying, "Thanks to Brevis, we had the luxury to take it deep. We aimed to avoid losing wickets to Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. The pitch was challenging for spinners, but easier for pace bowlers."
Brevis played a pivotal role, scoring 52 runs off just 25 balls, significantly narrowing the gap in runs and balls.
The Pressure of Batting Deep
Dhoni also discussed the challenges of batting deep during the chase.
"Being the last batter adds pressure; if I get out, the tension escalates, making it harder to rotate the strike. Shivam hit a couple of sixes, which helped lower the run rate," he noted.
Dhoni Contemplates His Future
Reflecting on the unwavering support from fans, Dhoni expressed, "The love and affection I have received over the years is incredible. At 42, I've had a long career. Many fans are unsure when my last game will be, so they come to watch me play. It's undeniable that I'm in the final phase of my career."
He acknowledged that a decision regarding his future could be on the horizon, stating, "After this IPL, I need to work hard for another 6-8 months to see if my body can handle the pressure. There's nothing to decide right now, but the support I've received is fantastic."
