CSK's Struggles Against Punjab Kings

In their latest match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) experienced their second loss, unable to defend a substantial score of 209 runs against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. However, the performance of 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre stood out as a silver lining for the team.

Mhatre delivered an impressive innings, scoring 73 runs off just 43 deliveries, which was instrumental in CSK achieving a total exceeding 200 runs while batting first. His innings included six boundaries and five sixes, marking his first half-century of the season.

Gavaskar Praises Mhatre's Potential

Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian captain, shared his thoughts on Mhatre's batting position during a discussion on Star Sports. He suggested that batting at number three would be ideal for the young talent. Gavaskar noted, "I believe number 3 is a good position for Ayush Mhatre. He has batted lower down the order in the Under-19 setup, but three could suit him well. He was dismissed first ball in the previous game, but showed no signs of being affected by it. That's the beauty of the 'Gen Next' mindset; they don't dwell too much on the past and focus on the present. It's a fantastic attitude."

CSK Sets a Challenging Target

CSK, batting first, set a target of 210 runs, thanks to Mhatre's significant contribution along with Shivam Dube, who scored 45 not out, and Sarfaraz Khan, who added 32 runs off just 12 balls. However, the Punjab Kings successfully chased down the target with eight balls remaining and five wickets in hand, aided by strong performances from their top-order batsmen and captain Shreyas Iyer.

Concerns Over CSK's Bowling

Gavaskar also expressed concerns regarding CSK's bowling performance, stating, "From what we've seen so far, CSK's biggest concern for the rest of the tournament will be their bowling. It means they may have to consistently score around 225-230 to give their bowlers a chance." He highlighted the depth in batting of many teams, including Punjab Kings, where Marcus Stoinis came in at No. 7 and played effectively. Gavaskar concluded that CSK needs to improve their bowling to remain competitive.
