Chennai Super Kings Coach Reflects on Disappointing IPL Season
Fleming's Candid Assessment After Loss to Rajasthan Royals
Following a six-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings' head coach Stephen Fleming provided a frank evaluation of the team's struggles. During the post-match press conference, the former New Zealand captain acknowledged that the team's disappointing performance stemmed from ongoing batting issues and an unstable top order, which they aim to rectify in the upcoming season.
Top Order Issues Highlighted
“Our order is not right at this stage,” Fleming admitted. “That’s something that we are always looking to rejig. We've got some strong ideas for next year so that all facets are covered. But that hasn't been possible this year because [of] lack of runs at the top.”
The match against RR once again revealed CSK's fragile top order, prompting yet another batting reshuffle that saw Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin moved up the order ahead of Dewald Brevis and MS Dhoni. This decision faced backlash from fans and former players, including Dale Steyn. Fleming explained that the team's frequent changes have led them to 'patch innings up' instead of establishing a solid foundation.
Acknowledgment of Current Form
“A lot of the batting positions are determined by how well a start we have,” he elaborated. “So we haven't had that, and we’ve been just patching innings up, really.”
Fleming also recognized that CSK's current standing at the bottom of the table is justified by their performance this season.
Looking Ahead: Positive Developments
“We don’t obviously like being down here… but it’s probably fitting that we’re at the bottom,” he stated. “We’ve played that type of cricket, so you can’t hide away from it.”
As the five-time champions prepare to conclude a challenging season, Fleming noted the emergence of Anshul Kamboj as a bright spot. He praised Kamboj's speed and deceptive bowling style, indicating that he could become a significant asset for the team.
Concerns Over Other Players
However, Matheesha Pathirana's performance has raised concerns. Retained with high hopes, the Sri Lankan bowler has struggled with consistency and rhythm.
“He was really out of form. He’s made improvements, but it’s still not to where we or he would like,” Fleming remarked. “He’s just at that crossroads where batsmen are playing him better. It’s a unique skill set, but it’s been a little bit off.”
Final Game and Future Plans
With only one match remaining in their season, CSK aims to restore some pride and provide younger players with valuable experience as they start strategizing for IPL 2026.
