Ayush Mhatre's Injury: A Setback for CSK

New Delhi: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced on Tuesday that their promising top-order batsman, Ayush Mhatre, will miss the rest of the IPL 2026 season due to a hamstring injury he sustained during a recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team indicated that Mhatre will need between six to twelve weeks for rehabilitation.

In a statement, CSK confirmed, "Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury incurred while batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. We wish him a swift recovery."

Following CSK's defeat in that match, batting coach Michael Hussey provided insights on Mhatre's condition, noting that while he was unsure of the injury's severity, it appeared to be serious.

Mhatre had entered the game as an impact substitute for Gurjapneet Singh during CSK's chase of 195 runs after the team lost opener Sanju Samson. The 18-year-old showcased his skills by scoring a rapid 30 runs off just 12 balls.

Unfortunately, he injured his hamstring while attempting a second run after the second ball of the fifth over. Although he completed the run, he collapsed in pain, prompting the physio to rush onto the field. He chose to continue batting but was dismissed shortly after.

Hussey remarked, "It’s a hamstring tear. We’ll likely scan him the next day. I’m not certain about the extent, but it doesn’t look good. Losing him is a significant blow as he has been performing well. However, this opens up opportunities for other players who haven’t had a chance yet, which is exciting."

Mhatre is now the third player from CSK to be sidelined this season, following bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis. Additionally, former captain MS Dhoni has yet to participate in any matches as he is still recovering from a calf injury sustained during practice before the tournament.

After their recent 10-run loss to SRH, CSK has slipped to seventh place in the points table, accumulating four points from six matches. Their next challenge will be against the Mumbai Indians on Thursday.
