Chelsea's Cole Palmer Faces Extended Absence Due to Toe Injury
Cole Palmer's Injury Update
Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca has announced that Cole Palmer will be out for an additional week following a toe fracture sustained at home. The young English midfielder was nearing a return from a previous groin injury but has encountered an unforeseen setback.
In a statement made prior to the Premier League match against Burnley, Maresca detailed that Palmer injured his left toe after accidentally hitting it against a door late at night. Consequently, he will miss the upcoming matches against Burnley, Barcelona, and Arsenal.
Maresca confirmed, "He is definitely unavailable for tomorrow, as well as for Barcelona and Arsenal. Unfortunately, he had an accident at home resulting in a fractured toe. All we know is that he won't be available this week or next week."
The manager also mentioned that Palmer was close to resuming full training after recovering from his groin issue. Although he had been seen at the training facility, he had not yet participated in first-team activities. "He was very close to returning. He was back with us, almost ready with the groin issue, which is encouraging, but now he has this minor setback," Maresca added.
Maresca observed that Palmer was at the club's facilities without socks or shoes, noting that he was not limping, yet acknowledged that even a minor toe injury can be quite painful.
Palmer has been sidelined since he left the pitch early during the 2-1 loss to Manchester United in September. His absence has necessitated tactical changes, although the team has continued to perform admirably.
Importance of Cole Palmer to Chelsea
Maresca expressed that both he and the team prefer having Palmer on the field. "The team performs better when Cole is playing; I feel much more confident with him on the pitch," he stated. "However, in his absence, we must find alternative solutions. The team is doing exceptionally well regardless."
Despite the absence of their key playmaker, Chelsea has only lost two of their last eleven matches across all competitions. They currently hold the third position in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Arsenal by eight points and second-placed Manchester City by two.
Palmer's anticipated return was expected to enhance Chelsea's attacking capabilities, but this latest injury means the club will have to manage without him for at least another week.
