Celebrating National Sports Day: Honoring Major Dhyanchand and Promoting Fitness
National Sports Day Celebrations
On August 29, India enthusiastically observes National Sports Day, coinciding this year with the commencement of the Men's Hockey Asia Cup 2025 in the historic city of Rajgir, Bihar. This date holds special significance as it marks the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyanchand, who has made a lasting impact on Indian sports.
National Sports Day is celebrated annually on August 29 to honor Major Dhyanchand, affectionately known as the 'Wizard of Hockey.' He led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. The celebration of this day as National Sports Day began in 2012 to recognize his extraordinary contributions.
The day serves not only to commemorate a remarkable athlete but also to promote the importance of sports and fitness in daily life. During this occasion, outstanding athletes and coaches across various sports are recognized with National Sports Awards.
This year's event is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under the 'Fit India Mission.' A national initiative titled 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' has been launched, running from August 29 to 31, encouraging individuals to engage in at least one hour of physical activity each day.
An official statement from the Press Information Bureau highlighted that this initiative aims to raise awareness about the benefits of daily physical activity in preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his greetings on X, stating, 'On this special occasion, we pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose excellence continues to inspire generations. Over the past decade, India's sports landscape has transformed significantly, with grassroots programs nurturing young talent and world-class facilities being developed. Our government is dedicated to supporting athletes and establishing India as a global center for sporting excellence.'
