Melissa McCurley, a pivotal figure in the evolution of the US Open Pickleball Championships, reflected on the tournament's remarkable journey as it marks its 10th anniversary. She expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s incredibly special to be here. It’s such a privilege and an honor.” McCurley emphasized that the tournament's growth has been intentional, focusing on enhancing the experience for each player and fan over the years.
Having been involved with the sport since before the tournament's inception, McCurley noted that the event's success has been a gradual process. “Witnessing everything come together through various challenges and milestones is truly amazing. Each year, our goal has been to improve the tournament,” she shared.
She also acknowledged the vital role of the community, saying, “The fans and spectators have all contributed to creating a legacy. This tournament has become a must-visit event for many.” The growth is evident in the participation statistics, with the inaugural event in 2016 attracting just over 800 players, making it the largest tournament at that time.
“The following year saw an increase to 1,200 players, then 2,000, and the numbers have continued to rise each year,” McCurley explained. This year, the demand exceeded expectations, with over 7,000 players applying to join, prompting the introduction of a lottery system for participation.
Additionally, this year holds personal significance for McCurley, as she competes in the tournament for the first time. “It’s hard to describe the electric atmosphere. Being here for the 10-year anniversary and actually playing this year is a significant milestone for me,” she remarked.
