CBI Investigates Athlete for Forgery and Doping Violations

Investigation Launched Against Sachin Poswal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an FIR against athlete Sachin Poswal for allegedly using counterfeit documents to create three distinct Unique IDs (UIDs) in order to compete in events while under a doping ban. The FIR cites violations under sections 318, 336, and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which address offenses related to cheating and forgery.

In November, the CBI commenced a preliminary inquiry into Sachin's activities, as he is currently serving a four-year suspension that extends until 2028. He managed to deceive the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) by presenting fake documents, including Aadhaar cards, to participate in two state meets in Delhi and the National Junior (U20) Federation Athletics Championships.

The AFI lodged a complaint at the Naraina police station following reports published in a local media outlet. Three articles highlighted how Sachin managed to compete despite his suspension, with titles such as ‘Suspended athlete participates in Delhi meet, AFI clueless’ (June 18, 2024), ‘Athlete under suspension gets new ID, takes part in Delhi cross-country championship’ (January 5, 2025), and ‘Banned athlete hoodwinks federation for third time’ (June 24, 2025).

Previously, the CBI had requested the AFI to provide all documents submitted by Sachin, including the Aadhaar cards and other IDs used to create the new UIDs.

Initially, Sachin presented an Aadhaar card (958561257932) indicating his birth date as March 1, 2006, which led to the issuance of UID No. ADLM200110 in June 2024. He later altered his birth date, surname, and father's name on a new Aadhaar card to obtain another UID for the Delhi cross-country championship, where he secured third place in the U-20 8 km run in December 2024, competing under the name Sachin Gurjar.

Subsequently, he changed his name again to Rachin Gujjar to compete in the National Junior (U20) Federation Athletics Championships in Prayagraj in June 2025. He excelled in his preliminary heat for the 1500m with a time of 3:56.53 but finished 16th in the 3000m. However, after inquiries from this correspondent, the updated results indicated that he was disqualified.

According to Sachin's previous ID, his birth date was March 3, 2006, and his father's name was Rambabu Poswal. In the new ID (ADLM122467), his birth date was altered to January 9, 2007, and his father's name changed to Rambabu Gurjar.
