Carmella stands out in WWE history as the only female wrestler to have won the Money in the Bank ladder match on two occasions. Her first victory occurred during the Premium Live Event in 2017, where her then-associate James Ellsworth controversially retrieved the briefcase and handed it to her.

This incident sparked significant debate both online and within the locker room, prompting WWE to organize a rematch just a week later to determine a new holder of the briefcase, which Carmella again won.

For a long time, it was speculated that the rematch was a response to the backlash WWE faced due to Ellsworth's involvement in the first match. However, this was not the case.

Recently, Ellsworth addressed these rumors on Twitter, clarifying that the rematch had been planned from the outset. Both he and Carmella were aware of the rematch even before the initial match took place.

“Actually not true. We always knew we were doing the second one before the first one happened; we did a rehearsal the next day for the second one. But you know 'internet,'” Ellsworth stated in his tweet.

The Inaugural Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match

In 2017, WWE marked a significant milestone in the Women's Evolution by hosting the inaugural Women's Money in the Bank ladder match. This historic event featured five superstars from the SmackDown Women's Division: Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya Neidhart, Tamina Snuka, and Carmella, with Carmella making history as the first-ever winner.

Just two days later on SmackDown, Carmella was stripped of her briefcase, leading SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan to announce a rematch for June 27, 2017. In this second match, Carmella successfully climbed the ladder to claim the briefcase herself, solidifying her status as the rightful holder of the contract.
