Brathwaite Praises Hope's Match-Winning Century

Carlos Brathwaite, the West Indies all-rounder and 2016 T20 World Cup champion, has commended Shai Hope for his remarkable unbeaten century that led to a victory against India in the second T20I. He emphasized the need for greater recognition of Hope's consistent performances over the years.

Hope achieved a stunning century off just 45 balls, aiding the West Indies in completing a remarkable chase of 250 runs, marking their highest T20I score against India. This performance allowed the visitors to equalize the five-match series at 1-1. Notably, this century is part of a series of impressive innings by Hope, who has now scored three centuries during this tour, including two in ODIs, with two of these contributing to victories.

Brathwaite's Thoughts on Hope's Recognition

During an interview at the World Championship of Legends (WCL) Season 3, Brathwaite expressed his delight that Hope's talent is finally receiving the global acknowledgment it deserves. He remarked, "Shai Hope has been exceptional for many years. He has more international centuries in India than Shreyas Iyer, who is on the verge of being considered world-class. Shai Hope is undoubtedly world-class, and the recognition he is gaining now, especially in India, the largest market, is well-deserved."

Modern T20 Challenges for Bowlers

Brathwaite also commented on the challenges bowlers face in today's T20 cricket, noting that the pitches have become increasingly favorable for batters. He stated, "It's tough to appreciate run-scoring these days, with T20 matches seeing scores of 240 being chased down. I prefer matches where bowlers have a fair chance, but it often feels like it's a battle between bowling machines and batters. It's not fair to blame any one team for poor bowling when conditions offer little support."

Celebrating Exceptional Performances

He urged teams to recognize outstanding performances rather than solely focusing on the weaknesses of the opposition. Brathwaite drew parallels with India's batting feats, particularly highlighting Shubman Gill's record-breaking innings of 223 during the second ODI, which was pivotal in chasing down a historic target of 406 runs.

He remarked, "When India chased down 400 runs, it was not about criticizing the West Indies bowlers; it was about appreciating the centuries, especially Gill's double century. Similarly, when the West Indies chased 250, I don't want to scrutinize the Indian team too harshly."

Resilience of the West Indies Team

Brathwaite acknowledged the contributions of players like Hope, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd, praising their resilience during a challenging tour. He reflected on the West Indies' recent performances, including scoring 405 runs in the second ODI and winning the third ODI, as well as bouncing back from an initial T20I defeat to secure a memorable win in the second match.

"I want to celebrate Shai Hope, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, and the never-say-die spirit of the West Indies. This tour has been tough, both on and off the field, with various reports about financial struggles back home. Yet, the resilience they have shown, scoring 400 in the second ODI and winning the third ODI, followed by a comeback in the second T20I, deserves recognition. We need to celebrate West Indies cricket," Brathwaite concluded.

Upcoming Matches
