New Delhi: The top-ranked tennis player in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, has announced his withdrawal from the Davis Cup Finals taking place in Italy due to a swollen hamstring, as he revealed on Tuesday.

Alcaraz aggravated his injury during the ATP Finals, where he faced Jannik Sinner in the final match on Sunday. His exit marks another significant blow for the International Tennis Federation.

In an emotional Instagram post, the six-time Grand Slam champion expressed, "I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have edema in my right hamstring, and the medical recommendation is not to compete. Playing for Spain has always been my greatest honor, and I was eagerly anticipating contributing to our fight for the Davis Cup. I’m heartbroken to be going home."

Sinner, currently ranked second in the world, had previously withdrawn from the tournament last month, a fact that has now been confirmed by the defending champions, Italy. Additionally, Lorenzo Musetti will also miss the event due to personal and health-related issues.

In light of these withdrawals, Italy is likely to call up Lorenzo Sonego, who has been training in Turin recently, as a potential replacement to bolster their team.

Despite these challenges, Italy is set to continue their campaign, facing Austria on Wednesday in what promises to be a tough quarter-final match.
