Alcaraz Claims Victory at Japan Open

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz marked his return to form by winning the Japan Open Tennis Championships, defeating Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday. This victory comes after a challenging 2026 season plagued by injuries.

Ranked third in the world, Alcaraz showcased his skills by beating Lehecka with a score of 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final match of the ATP 500 tournament held in Tokyo. Despite facing a determined opponent, Alcaraz's exceptional play secured him his first title since February's Doha tournament.

Expressing Joy Over His Comeback

Alcaraz expressed his delight in lifting the trophy again, stating, "I am really happy to be able to lift a trophy again." He had been sidelined from competitive play between April and August due to a wrist injury. "It has been a while, and obviously, it is extra special after my injury. Winning in my second tournament back means a lot to me," he added.

Reflecting on his performance, he noted, "It was a tough week. I didn’t find my best level, but I managed to find good solutions. Playing the most important points well is what matters, and I believe I did that this week. Today was my best match of the week, or at least the most consistent."

Joining an Elite Group

With this victory over Lehecka, which lasted just over an hour and a half, Alcaraz improved his ATP 500 tournament record to an impressive 21-0, following his defeat to Holger Rune in the 2025 Barcelona final. He also became only the third player to successfully defend the Tokyo title, joining tennis legends Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras.

Conquering Doubts Amidst Injury

When asked about his fears of not winning again during his recovery, Alcaraz acknowledged the presence of negative thoughts but emphasized his efforts to remain positive. He shared, "A lot of negative thoughts come to mind, like whether I would return to my previous form or play without pain. I tried to push those thoughts away. My team and I believed that if I returned, I would feel 100 percent. I just had to commit fully to every shot, and it worked out."
