Canada Celebrates Historic 6-0 Victory Over Qatar in FIFA World Cup 2026
Prime Minister Applauds Team's Remarkable Achievement
In a momentous occasion for Canadian football, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his admiration for the national team following their groundbreaking 6-0 triumph against Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This victory marks Canada's first-ever win in the tournament's history.
Carney was present at BC Place in Vancouver for the Group B match and later visited the Canadian locker room to congratulate the players on this significant milestone.
He shared a video capturing his interaction with the team, stating, "In moments like this, you truly see character and teamwork."
The Prime Minister praised the athletes for their exceptional performance on one of football's grandest stages.
"You demonstrated a level of character that many may never achieve in their lives, and you did it while the entire nation and much of the world were watching. Even if they missed it live, they will certainly hear about it by tomorrow," he remarked.
A Dominant Display by Canada
Canada showcased an impressive performance throughout the match, overpowering Qatar and achieving a remarkable World Cup milestone.
This victory not only marks a historic win for Canada but also makes them the first host nation to score six goals in a World Cup match since Argentina's 6-0 win over Peru in 1978.
Jonathan David was the standout player, netting a stunning hat-trick, making him the first Canadian to score three goals in a World Cup match. He is also only the second player from outside Europe and South America to achieve a World Cup hat-trick, following USA's Bert Patenaude in 1930.
Key Moments of the Match
Cyle Larin opened the scoring for Canada in the 16th minute, followed by David's goals in the 29th minute, first-half stoppage time, and his hat-trick goal deep into stoppage time.
Nathan Saliba, who came off the bench, added another goal, while Qatar's Mohammed Mani contributed to the scoreline with an own goal, as Canada's relentless offense left the visitors struggling.
The match was marred by disciplinary issues for Qatar, who ended the game with nine players. Assim Madibo received a red card after a VAR review for a dangerous tackle on Canadian midfielder Ismaël Kone, who was later taken off on a stretcher, raising concerns among fans and players alike.
A Message of Pride and Gratitude
Despite the injury setback, Canada maintained full control of the game, solidifying their position in Group B with this commanding win.
In his closing remarks to the team, Carney conveyed the pride felt across the nation following this historic achievement.
"I couldn't be prouder as a Canadian. On behalf of all Canadians, thank you for everything you have done to represent our nation, your families, and friends, and for teaching us all a valuable lesson," he concluded.
